Around the age of 9, during the third grade of Primary, boys and girls begin to hear the words divide or division. As with everything unknown, those words and at these ages frighten and excite at the same time. What is a division? What does it mean to divide? it will be difficult? These are some of the first questions that children ask themselves. To start answering these questions, we bring you This very simple home game to help children understand the concept of division.
It is a very simple and very easy activity to prepare with which children will be able to approach mathematics in a very simple and fun way. Do you dare?
- Pompoms or buttons
Mathematics has always been presented as an imposition, a subject that must be given as an obligation in school, instead of presenting it as a game that will serve us for life and that we will do at some point every day. With activities, situations and games of everyday life we will be able to attract children to their knowledge and it is well known that something that is learned by playing is never forgotten.
This is the following activity that I show you below, in a fun and entertaining way they will be able to understand what it is to divide, which is nothing more than sharing and distributing equally. Here we go!
Following these simple 3 steps we can prepare our activity:
1. We distribute pompoms or buttons among the boys and girls.
2. On a sheet of paper we draw some circles.
3. We fill those circles with pompoms or buttons.
As you can see, the preparation to carry out this game is very easy. But how do we carry it out? Well, we're not going to get too complicated either.
The activity is developed in a very simple way, the same process is always repeated but changing the quantities with which we are going to work.
- First we distribute, for example, 30 objects to the boys and girls (pompoms, buttons, chickpeas, whatever we can think of).
- We draw 3 circles on the folio, and explain that inside each circle there must be the same number of objects, that is, we are going to distribute them equally in each one of them.
- Thus, in this case in each circle there must be 10 objects.
For the children to understand the concept of division, we will propose different figures. Once they have understood that it is about sharing, we could start talking about the different parts of a division: what we have, the circles between which we distribute, how much each one gets, etc.
There are several benefits that we obtain with this activity, most of them focus on mathematical and linguistic knowledge.
- Mathematical knowledge
As a first contact, with this activity we help the boys and girls understand what dividing consists of, what is 'sharing' or 'sharing'. Subsequently the concepts can be introduced: dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder as elements that are part of the division and from there develop this field widely.
Thanks to this activity, they are also working on mathematical aspects such as counting, grouping and enhancing mental calculation.
- Linguistic knowledge
We promote linguistic knowledge by reading sentences of mathematical problems, in which situations arise in which it is necessary to distribute a given numerical quantity among several equal collections.
